Acupuncture is steadily gaining wide acceptance as a respected and effective form of healthcare in the U.S. Many have already benefited from the proven effects for pain management, endocrine conditions, circulatory disorders, and more. Acupuncture alone or used in conjunction with modern medicine can strengthen and support the body and help the body to recover from health disorders faster.
Acupuncture has been used successfully for numerous health conditions for over 2,000 years in various parts of Asia. During the past few decades, modern research has been studying how acupuncture works physiologically. There are many explanations on how acupuncture affects the body to work the way it does. The National Institute of Health (NIH) suggests that acupuncture "may activate the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, resulting in a broad spectrum of systemic effects. Alterations in the secretion of neurotransmitters and neurohormones, and changes in the regulation of blood flow, both centrally and peripherially, have been documented. There is also evidence of alterations in immune functions produced by acupuncture."1 Following are a few current theories considered valid:
- blood chemistry theory: acupuncture affects blood concentrations of triglycerides, cholesterol, and phospholipids
- neurotransmitter theory: acupuncture affects higher brain functions and neurotransmitters such as endorphins and serotonin to maintain homeostasis in body
- vascular-interstitial theory: acupuncture affects the electrical system of the body to augment healing of injured tissues via enhanced closed-circuit transport
